Visitors to IDRC

All visitors to the IDRC must have prior approval from the IDRC Director, Operations Manager and/or University BioSafety Officer. Individuals under the age of 18 years are not allowed access to the IDRC without prior approval from the BioSafety Officer. Tour groups are prohibited from entering any high containment area unless they have prior approval from the BioSafety Officer, Operations Manager and the Director of the IDRC. This includes any chemical or biological laboratory where work is being conducted. In addition, a thorough background check can be conducted at any time prior and during a visit. A background check can be done at the discretion of the IDRC Director, unless they are working with Select Agents. Then they are required by the CDC to have a Federal background check done.

General Requirements for Visitors Prior to Visiting the IDRC

  • All visitors must have a person designated by the IDRC Director or Vice President for Research to grant access to them (i.e. Sponsor/Principal Investigator (PI)).
  • Once access is granted the Operations/BioSafety staff must be notified of the visit.
    • Background information and justification for the visit must be provided at least 48 hours prior.
  • All visitors are required to provide one or more of the following documentation prior to entering any BSL3 areas of the IDRC (refer to chart below):
    • Valid Identification (Driver’s License, Passport, Workers Permit, etc.)
    • Current PPD Test/TB Waiver (Required only if entering TB Research Areas or Virology Suite)
    • Proof Of Insurance
    • Visitor SOPs that will be worked with while in the facility.

General Requirements for Visitors While Visiting the IDRC

  • All visitors are required to adhere to Building Entry, BSL3 Barrier Entry and BSL3 Barrier Exit SOP.
  • All visitors must be accompanied by authorized personnel at all times while in the facility unless otherwise directed.
  • All visitors are required to sign in and out of the visitor’s log book every time they enter the facility.

Visitor Classification

  • Temporary Visitors defined as an individual or group on site for a few hours to days, usually observing a new technique, servicing equipment or inspecting facilities.
  • Visiting Workers (short term or long term) defined as an individual or group on site for a few weeks to months, usually a collaborative venture with a Sponsor or a renter of laboratory space.

(a) Current PPD Test documentation is only required for access into the TB areas and Virology Suite. However, visitors entering the Virology Suite may sign the TB waiver in place of the PPD test documentation.

(b) Worker’s compensation and liability insurance from visitor’s institution/company.

(c) All SOPs submitted by visitor must be approved by the BioSafety Officer and IDRC Director prior to usage.
