Transfer of Animals

Transfer of animals is a very common procedure and yet it raises a lot of angst among the parties involved, namely the investigator, Laboratory Animal resources (LAR), Research Integrity and Compliance Review Office (RICRO), and the  Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Transfer may involve: a) location change in which case the primary players are the investigator and LAR; b) transfer from a breeding protocol to a study protocol or vice versa which also involves the investigator and LAR; c) transfer from one study protocol to another study protocol belonging to the same investigator which involves the investigator, LAR and RICRO; d) and transfer of animals has from one investigator to another investigator which involves the investigator, RICRO, IACUC and LAR.

To transfer animals from one location to another (e.g. one room to another, or from main campus to VMC etc) fill out the LAR Animal Transfer Request form available at (http://www.colostate.edu/depts/lar/atreq.html) and submit it to LAR. You may also use hard copy forms available from LAR. LAR will work with the investigator to effect the transfer. These actions ensure that the right animals are transferred and appropriate changes are made in the protocol for correct billing and regulatory purposes. If, you are taking animals out of the Painter Center to a laboratory please fill out the Animal Transport Check Out form in the Green check out folder at the reception desk.

To transfer animals from a breeding protocol to a study, complete and submit an LAR Animal Transfer Request form to LAR. To transfer an animal from one study protocol to another study protocol belonging to the same investigator contact the RICRO (491-1553) for appropriate action. After confirmation with RICRO submit an LAR Animal Transfer Request form to LAR. For transfer between investigators, both must submit amendments to the RICRO, however, only the investigator transferring the animals needs to complete the LAR Animal Transfer Request form.

In summary all animal transfers require completion and submission of an LAR Animal Transfer Request form to LAR. RICRO should be contacted for appropriate action for all animal transfers except those involving transfer from a breeding to a study protocol belonging to the same investigator. Following these simple steps will ensure appropriate transfer of animals, reduction in anxiety of all parties, correct billing and allows for compliance with federal expectations. Please do not hesitate to contact LAR (491-7364) or RICRO (491-1553) for further clarifications. If you have any questions regarding the welfare of any animal at Colorado State University or you feel your questions have not been sufficiently addressed contact the University Veterinarian at 491-7194.
