The use of animals for research, teaching and testing at Colorado State University is governed by federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies as well as internal policies. Use of animals is a privilege granted by the public and we must always be cognizant and vigilant about humane and ethical use of animals. The current laws and regulations arose out of the public’s concern for well being of animals and Colorado State University strongly respects that view. We take pride in the high standard of care provided for animals at this institution. If you have any concerns about the welfare of any animals please contact the
University Veterinarian, the Director
of Laboratory Animal Resources, the
University Bioethicist, the Institutional Animal Care
& Use Committee, the Director of Research Integrity and Compliance Review Office or the Vice President for Research immediately.
The various regulations set the standards for humane care and use of animals, define responsibilities of Colorado State University and the investigators, and provide for the safety of individuals working with animals. All use of animals for research, teaching and testing must be reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) prior to initiation. Any proposed changes must also be reviewed and approved by the IACUC before initiation. In addition individuals working with animals are required to participate in the occupation health program.
